From the 2008-09 school year...
8th Grade Reading
The Eighth grade is currently reading Night by Elie Wiesel. They
are also doing research on concentration camps which they will present to the
class. They are hoping to be able to go to Washington, D.C. and to the
Holocaust Museum to enhance all that is being learned in class.
7th Grade
The seventh grade is working hard to earn enough money to go to
Washington, D.C. on a field trip at the end of the school year. Even though we
number only nine students in the class, we sold 117 hoagies! In Spanish, the
7th grade is learning verbs.
6th Grade
6th grade has been very busy reading The Devil’s Arithmetic by Jane Yolen. In English class, the students are with partners writing Tall Tales.
The students are creating characters and using graphic organizers to get
started. They plan to make the stories into power point presentations to share
with others.
Thanks -
6th, 7th and 8th graders are grateful for the new flat screen TVs. The
teacher’s laptop can be hooked up and used as an additional resource to the
classroom computer.
Thank you to all the parents who sent in paper towels, tissue, and cleaning
supplies! We are prepared for anything!
Middle School Project
Middle School Project continues as students research and design projects to
coincide with Pittsburgh’s 250th birthday. Did you know Pittsburgh was the
birthplace of Silly Putty, Zippo Lighters and the Ferris Wheel? Look for these
and many more exciting stories coming to life in the halls of our middle school!

Welcome Back to School!!!!
I hope your summer was great!!
Here are some things to look forward
to for the New School Year.
Sixth Grade
Reading:
We will be reading novels this year. Some of the titles include Number the
Stars, The Devil's Arithmetic, and Belle Prater's Boy.
Spelling: We have new
Spelling Books. They have great activities in them as well as other subjects
incorporating the spelling words. Pre-tests will be on Monday, homework
through the week, and tests will be on Friday.
English: The English
books are rather large and bulky. The students will be able to leave them in
my classroom instead of carrying them around. There are practice English
papers that will be used for homework assignments.
Seventh Grade/Homeroom
Spanish: We will begin by learning basic vocabulary such as color
words, greeting, months of the year, etc. Students will be tested mostly on
Friday mornings. I have asked each student to have a Spanish/English
dictionary for class.
Homeroom: Please send in a box of Kleenex,
a roll of paper towels, and a pack of filler paper.
Eighth Grade
English: We will begin with Nouns. The students will have plenty of
practice papers to go with each chapter. Most of their homework will be sheets
that go with each lesson.
Spanish: Students should bring their
Spanish/English dictionaries to class. We will begin with reviewing verbs, but
quickly go into conjugating and translating.
Spelling:
Students will have pre-tests on
Monday, and tests on Friday. It is very important that they study each week, as
the words are a bit more difficult than last year. Definition test will also
become part of the testing as we adjust to the new words.
Reading:
We will be reading some novels this year.
I am going to have the students
voice which novels they would prefer reading. Some of the titles include
Briar Rose, Sarah Bishop, Night, To Kill a Mockingbird, and Star
Girl. We will be writing reports and presenting them as well-depending on
the subject we are reading about.
I have asked the eight grade to bring a pack of filler paper as well, as we seem
to through it quickly.
Fifth Grade
Math: We will be starting off the year with a basic review.
addition and subtraction followed by multiplication and division. There will be
Math homework each night. Some assignments will be shorter than others depending
on their understanding of the new concept. I look forward to getting to know all
of the fifth grade students. Welcome to the upstairs! We are glade to have you
here!
Third Grade
Library: I will be teaching library to the third grade this year. I
am looking forward to having them in library. I used to teach third grade here
at St. Ursula. Third grade is a great age! So, I'll see you all soon.
Looking forward
to a productive and enriching year.
