Dear Second Grade Families,
Here we are in our second week of school and I wanted to send home a letter to explain homework to you. This week the children will have one page in the Simple Solutions book each night this week. I will also send home the first spelling list on Thursday for a test next Friday (9/9/11). I am starting it early due to the Labor Day holiday on Monday, September 5th. Please check your child’s student planner for the homework each night. After all the homework is completed each night please initial so that I know you have seen what the homework was for the evening.

The homework will follow this schedule during a normal five day week.

Reading

Monday - Phonic Reader-your child reads and finds the phonic skill words for the week.

                 Highlight or circle skill words.
Tuesday - Read the story in Reading Street Reader. I will also send home the Leveled Reader to start.
Wednesday - Leveled Readers- Read and answer questions in back of book. You can use another

piece of paper to write the answers.
Thursday - Re-read story in Reading Street Reader for the selection test on Friday

There will also be activities on for our spelling lists on spellingcity.com

Math
Simple Solutions book usually one page per night. Other work as needed.
All other subjects (Religion, English, Science and Social Studies) homework as needed.

*The students are given points for completing their homework each night. These points will factor into their grade for the report period.
* Again, please check your child’s planner each night and sign your initials. There will also be a space for your child to tell you the color of their day. This is explained in the rules note sent home as well.

Please let me know if you have any questions about the homework or the homework schedule. Thank you in advance for your cooperation and participation.

July 2011

Hello and Welcome to Second Grade!

I can’t believe that the school year will begin soon. I hope that you are having a great summer.

I am very excited for this year to begin; I can’t wait to see how much you have grown from when I taught you last. This year will be a very important year for you as you grow in your faith with the Sacraments that you will receive this year. You will also get the chance to learn many wonderful new things this throughout the year.

I will look for your smiling face on August 25th which is the first day of school.

God Bless you and please stay safe as you enjoy the rest of your summer.

Miss McKaveney

Second Grade Presents Hansel & Gretel

The 2nd grade class performed their rendition of Hansel and Gretel on Tuesday Dec 21st in front of a packed audience of parents, grandparents, and loved ones under the direction of Prof. Coury.  The children worked very hard on this project for several months and they did a great job!

   Second Grade prepared for

 and participated in our first

 class mass on Friday October

15th. Each child took part in

 the mass through readings,

 petitions, being a cantor, or

 bringing up the gifts. The

 children should be proud of

 their dedication and reverence

Second Grade Sacraments

Second grade has prepared all year to receive the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Holy Eucharist. An evening class in March gathered the school and CCD together to make the altar cloth, learn the hymns, and reinforce the definitions and meaning of the sacraments. The teachers, Sister Joanita and Mrs. Bossong have created lasting impressions that will stay with the students all their lives and have set the foundation of their Christian life and practice. Tommy and Annie's mom created a beautiful ceramic oval bowl to commemorate the receiving of the sacrament. The students and Mrs. K placed their thumbprints around the edge and they were given details to create a unique "person". Please pray for the second grade as they live what they have been taught by Jesus, St. Ursula School and their families.

.

The Leveled Reader program each Thursday allows students to share two stories distributed weekly. The stories cover many areas including social studies, science and history. As a homework assignment, students write answers to the questions and use a glossary and table of contents regularly. This lesson prepares them to think independently and improve the writing skill. Last weeks books: Goods and Services, and Who Can Help?

.

Second Grade's Classroom Door will be filled with special thoughts behind the flowers as the month progresses

.

Happy Valentine's Day!
The Second Grade enjoyed a St. Valentine Day party that included two origami projects, four great creative and original games, a snack of Valentine kabobs of fruit and heart marshmallows arranged to look like Cupid's arrows delivering the special treat. Tom and Annie brought in a story about the history of St. Valentine that was read to them while they snacked. It was a wonderful day. Thank you to room parents and helpers.

.

Happy Halloween!

The Second Grade class enjoyed the Halloween Party! After the parade under beautiful blue skies, they assembled a Trick or Treat Haunted House bag to haul all their goodies, played three awesome games, ate apples topped with caramel, whipped cream and sprinkles. Cookies and Krispy Treats rounded out the menu and parents who stayed to help got a snack too! Prizes were awarded to the students who guessed the most M&Ms in the alien's body and making the most words from "Happy Halloween".  Aletta F. swept the prizes guessing 652 M&Ms (there were 1,082 M&Ms) and making 15 words. Thanks to the parents who helped make the party so much fun!
