Robotics - Lego League - Last Update 1/27/10

Robotics meets after school on Thursdays from 3 to 5pm.

FIRST LEGO League was created through a partnership between FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) and the LEGO Group. FIRST LEGO League introduces young people to the fun and excitement of science and technology.

Kids solve real-world engineering problems using hands-on problem solving skills. They form teams of up to ten students. They apply math and science concepts to research, design, build, and program autonomous robots. The robot has to accomplish approximately nine different tasks in 2.5 minutes. Then they compete in a sports-like tournament that teaches them teamwork skills and builds self-esteem and confidence.

St. Ursula formed two teams- The ROBOVIKINGS and the ROBOVIKINGS JR.

Students are presented with a challenge. The 2009 challenge was called "Smart Move". The theme was transportation- gaining access to things while avoiding or surviving impacts.

The teams also have to complete a research project. The 2009 project asked the teams to look at a community to discover how people and things travel. They then had to discover ways to make it safer, more efficient, less expensive, and more environmentally friendly.

For example, the JR. team's project proposed that global meetings of world leaders be held in cyberspace.

Congratulations RoboVikings

   Congratulations to the nineteen

5th through 8th grade students who

competed at the First Lego League

 robotics competition on December 5.

The event was held at the National

 Robotics Engineering Center in

Pittsburgh with over 70 teams in

attendance. A big thank you goes to

 Mrs. Lehmeier, who mentored the

teams and met with the students

many days after school to help the

 teams prepare for the competition.

Thank you to all of the parents

and St. Ursula alum Chris Z.

(older brother of Dan) who helped make the experience so great for our students.  To see more about the First Lego League Competition, visit their website.

Robovikings Return!

We are very excited about the revival of the robotics program this year! St. Ursula has 2 teams of 10 students each: the Robovikings (7th & 8th graders) and the Junior Robovikings (5th & 6th graders). Thanks to Mrs. Lehmeier for leading the students and many parent volunteers in this fun and educational program. Kudos to St. Ursula alum Chris Z. (older brother of Dan) for sharing his knowledge and experience with all of the newcomers. It is a true blessing!
The students have been busy setting up the field mat along with designing and building their robots. The next steps involve programming the robots to perform various task or missions within a 2.5 minute time frame. In addition, each team is developing a project involving transportation. It will be presented to a panel of judges the day of the competition.
The competition will be held on Saturday, December 5th at the National Robotics Engineering Center in Lawrenceville with some 70 teams participating. We wish all of our Robovikings the best of luck!
