Reconstruction Efforts from the December Water
Damage
last
update 7/9/08
On December 22nd 2007, a broken water pipe in the girls lavatory caused water to
run for hours throughout the first floor of our school.
Subsequently, the weight of the water laying in the ceiling of the lower level
cafeteria literally brought the ceiling to the ground. Because the school was
built many years ago, clean up from the water damage has been complicated by the
need for asbestos abatement.
We are counting our blessings! Most importantly, our students and faculty were
all safely at home celebrating their holidays when this occurred. Students
quickly returned to school at a temporary location thanks to neighboring parish,
St. Richard. The students have been
back to school on the St. Ursula property, in brand new portable classrooms, since January
28th. The learning
process is alive and well at St. Ursula. The asbestos abatement is nearing
completion and we are currently in the process of obtaining several bids for the
reconstruction. A St. Ursula parishioner and architect for the Parish capital
building process has been hired by the diocese to oversee the reconstruction
phase.
Although the estimates are not complete, we do know that they will amount to a
very large figure. Most of the costs of abatement and reconstruction will be
covered by our insurance. However, the cost of those repairs not covered by
insurance will be the responsibility of the Parish and School. These unexpected
expenses are much more than our school's budget had allowed for maintenance and
repairs.
If you
or someone you know would like to make a contribution to our school’s future,
please send your tax deductible contribution to:
St. Ursula School

Park, PA 15101
Please indicate that your donation is for the school and its
reconstruction project by writing "Reconstruction Account" on your check memo.
We will acknowledge each contribution with the required tax statement.
We are so very thankful for the many prayers, helpful hands and contributions we
have already received from our community and we look forward to another 100
years of providing exceptional Catholic education.

School Restoration News added
4/1/08
Work in the school is progressing each day. The cafeteria is ready for new
lights, new ceiling, and new wall coverings. The kitchen will have a new look
with new freezers, stove and a new layout. The restrooms on the bottom floor are
also being renovated for handicap accessibility as well as with new fixtures.
All of the classrooms on the first floor are ready to be painted and tiled. The
offices and lobby will be relocated to a classroom so that they can be updated.
GS Jones has contracted to have the restorations complete by August 15. Thanks
to our good friends who have donated $5,575 toward restoration that is not
covered by insurance. Among our contributors was St. Bonaventure School children
who sent cards and $425 that they collected. We also received a donation from
Central Catholic High School. We are grateful for our good neighbors.
Progress is
slow but steady added 4/18/08
Reconstruction has been underway since December. Floors are have been
stripped to the bare concrete in the hallways and classrooms. The classrooms are
being painted and intercom systems are being wired into each classroom. The
cafeteria has been stripped of all of the old materials and the walls and
ceilings have been exposed for the reconstruction to begin. The asbestos removal
on the second floor is underway.
The second floor is sealed off to begin the asbestos removal on that floor. Each room will now be equipped with an intercom Office is emptied and prepared for reconstruction

Parents join the reconstruction effort
added 4/25/08
Our restoration company, GS Jones, is currently painting the walls and door
trim in the school, but insurance is not paying for the lockers and metal
shelving in the classrooms to be painted. Two parent volunteers painted the
lockers and shelving in the teacher’s room last week to match the trim and it
really looks GREAT!
Parent volunteers have begun the task of completing the additional painting
in each classroom, which must be completed before the flooring company comes in
to lay the floor tile. We have solicited area businesses for donations of paint
and supplies and we are asking for help from school families and friends to
complete the task!
If you love to paint, or are willing to try, please plan to join us this week
(April 24, 25, 26)! Help is also needed with cleaning the lockers and shelves
before painting and preparing the surface for painting. We will send out
announcements if more days are needed.
It is coming together quickly
The destruction and removal is done and the construction and clean up
is underway. Everyday brings new and big changes...
- A drain has been added for the serving line in the kitchen so that the warming
tables so can be
drained easily.
- The office painting is almost completed.
- The floor tiles are here.
- We have huge (modern) refrigerators/freezers, sinks.
- The storage room in rear is widened and was being painted.
- All the first floor parent volunteer lockers and shelves are completed.
- On to the second floor! The computer room (second floor) has been started.
Everyone willl be amazed at the "look" of the rooms.
Please remember to give some time to help paint the lockers, Susan and Ginny
really need some help to be able to finish.
Floors are installed

Shades of light blue, creamy yellow, and mauve are blended and patterned to
provide a very airy, open and bright atmosphere in the hallways and classrooms.
Moving the epods out
added 7/9/08
As work is wrapping up inside the school, the epods leave the St.
Ursula campus. The new school year will begin in a remodeled and updated school.
For more information, please visit our
January New page to see
photos of the epod classrooms and of our students adapting to the situation.
