PTG Year in Review
This year has surely been one to remember. We welcomed 10 new
kindergarten families and 3 other new families in 1st, 7th and 8th grade. We
also started the New Year by bringing our library project to an end. It was a
hectic time and very labor intensive, but with the help of many dedicated
parents, students, alumni and church members, it finally happened! The actual
“grand opening” coincided with our Annual Welcome Back School Picnic and a
lovely children’s mass on September 30th. We were blessed to share the day with
a guest reader/artist, Mr. Ramon Riley from Pine Richland High School.
October brought Halloween Parties and even though we were rained out and had to
have our parade indoors, everyone still had fun.
November started the busy holiday season with field trips to Phipps
Conservatory, the Crèche concert, Night at the Races, the 8th grade Pancake
Breakfast, the Cahal Dunne concert, benefit nights at local restaurants, Kids
Bingo and Food Drive, Forensics meets, Kindergarten Open House, and the ever
popular Jeans Day.
December brought Santa’s Workshop, Cookies with Santa, the Band Concert and the
first ever Polar Express Pajama Party Night in our new library. The teacher’s
enjoyed their yearly Christmas Party. It was a busy but festive month.
Unfortunately, December also brought on our biggest challenge yet, the broken
pipe. Even though it swept devastation throughout the school, we managed to get
everything and everyone organized for impromptu field trips, and a two week
session at St. Richard’s Social Hall our temporary “school house” until our
“e-pods” were ready.
Through all the havoc, we only lost one week of actual class time, but it did
mean canceling all the highly anticipated Catholic Schools Week activities. At
the January 7th meeting with GS Jones and the Diocese, we were informed about
the restoration process and the tentative schedule for renovation. We even
managed to hold our scheduled Open House in the church basement on January 27th.
February brought an early Lent, the earliest Ash Wednesday since 1913. We were
back in full swing with classes and the Valentine’s Day Parties went off without
a hitch.
March held the annual Pot O’ Gold Auction, which was the biggest success to
date, $28,000.
In April we held a parent seminar and our first ever Vendor Fair, with 17
vendors and approximately 60 shoppers, it was a fun, ladies night out and the
money raised was used for painting supplies for our classroom shelves and
lockers. God provides!
PTG will show appreciation for our teachers and staff in May, an Usborne book
e-fair continues on line through May 31 and PTG will fund the 8th grade
graduation reception.
As we come to the end of the 2007-2008 school year, we face many new challenges
for the upcoming year. Naturally the biggest, and most exciting, is getting back
into our new school.
Looking back on the six short years I’ve been involved at St. Ursula, I’ve
noticed that whenever a need is presented, someone steps up to help.
We all know that a school like ours couldn’t exist without parental involvement.
So as we go into our “new” building, I’d like everyone to consider what they can
do to make St. Ursula even better than it is. That could mean something as small
as a suggestion, or all the way to taking on a new project.
Next year the PTG will have opportunities available and we can always use new
ideas….so if you are inclined to volunteer, please contact any one of the
current officers for more information.

News Online Book Fair
St. Ursula, in conjunction with Usborne Books, has set up an On-Line E-fair that
will continue to help our school earn free books for our new library. All you
have to do to help our school is shop on-line at
www.UsborneReadersExcel.com. Once there, click on the link for St. Ursula
under Active E-fairs on the top right hand section of the site. There are
Internet specials and books on clearance that are up to 50% off. These Internet
only specials change twice a month, so check back often. Now is the perfect time
to stock up on holiday gifts and at the same time help your school. Books you
purchase will be shipped immediately for a small shipping fee. You can also use
this site to donate books to the library. If you want to donate a book to the
school library in honor of your child, click on the Wish List link on the
E-fair. There you will see a listing of the books we would like to have in our
school library. All donated books will have a donation plate placed in the front
of the book indicating who the book was donated by. Let’s all work together in
helping our library be the best it can be by supporting this wonderfully simple
way to earn free books!
