Kindergarten Countdown

August 2010

 Dear Parents/Guardians,

As the 2010-2011 school year approaches, we look forward to giving your child a positive kindergarten experience.  The first day of school will be Thursday, August 26.  On that day, the children will come at 9:00 a.m. and be dismissed at 11:00 a.m.  This will give them a chance to become acquainted with their classmates and teachers.  On Friday, August 27, the children will have a full day of school.  School will begin at 8:15 a.m. and end at 2:50 p.m.

The following list contains the supplies that your child will need: 1 box of 8 crayons (More than eight crayons cause problems at the beginning of the year), 1 pair of scissors with blunt ends but sharp enough to cut easily, 6 glue sticks (no liquid glue or glue gel), one wide spaced spiral notebook-1 subject 70 ct. - and 6 standard pencils. Also, your child will need a pocket folder in his/her book bag to carry home papers each day.  Please mark all supplies with your child’s name and place them in a plastic box approximately 5”x 9”x 3.”

Please be sure to give us your child’s transportation information on the first day of school.  How will your child be transported home after school each day: parent pick-up, bus (district and number), or after school program? Please label your child’s book bag with this information. If someone other than a parent will pick up your child anytime throughout the year, please send a note stating that fact.  If the method of transportation changes, it is imperative that you send a note that day stating the specifics.

If you plan to send money for al a carte items at lunch, it is good to have a change purse that you always put in the same location in the book bag.  Lunch money should be sent in an envelope with your child’s name, “kindergarten” and the words “lunch money.” Notes from home should go in that location, also, so that your child always knows where to look.  It is a good idea to remind your child that he/she needs to give the note to the teacher.

If you pick up your child at the end of the day, please give your child’s name to the school secretary and wait in the lobby.  The secretary will call your child’s name when the bell rings.  We will make sure that your child reaches the lobby.

We are looking forward to seeing you and your child on Thursday, August 26.

Thank you,

                Mrs. Bridgeman and Mrs. Hofbauer

  Reilly's Summer Seat Farm

The Kindergarten field trip to Reilly's

Summer Seat Farm was great fun. The

children rode hay wagons and enjoyed an

 educational talk about how strawberries

grow given by Sherrie Reilly and her

 puppet friend Blossom. Finally, the

children went to the barn to pet the

baby animals. You can tell from the smiles

that the children were delighted. I thought

you might enjoy seeing how many

wonderful chaperones we had join us.

  Workshop

These are pictures of our spring
workshop. "New life" was the theme,
and the butterfly was an important
 part of that theme.

Thank you to all of the parents
who joined us for these weekly
 workshops throughout the school year.
We enjoyed having you and hope that

you enjoyed being a part of them too.

Kindergarten Goes Green with St. U Alumni

Catholic Schools Week has us going

"green" at St. Ursula School. Under the

guidance of Chrissy Spohn, St. Ursula

graduate and junior in high school, the

  kindergarten children make "litter bugs"

using recycled egg cartons as reminders

of what they can do to make the

  environment more green! Chrissy is

earning her Star in Girl Scouts, and

  St. Ursula is the beneficiary.

  KDKA's Dennis Bowman Visits

Kindergarten and Ready K model their

  Dennis Bowman weather hats after

  returning from the weather assembly

with Mr. Bowman. The children were

  thrilled with Mr. Bowman's presentation

and with his puppet friend, Chester

  Drawers.

  The Joy of Giving

To raise money to assist in

the relief efforts in Haiti, the

student were asked to make a

  donation to the collection during

the school Mass. In return, they

  were permitted to wear jeans

  to school that day.

God bless you for all your

  generosity toward the

  people of Haiti. At our

  All-School Mass this past

  Friday we collected $1,825

to send to the relief effort

  for the earthquake victims.

  Thank you for your

  overwhelming response.

Mrs. McTighe prepares kindergarten for Sign Shine

    Mrs. Janine McTighe shares her

  understanding of deafness with the

  kindergarten. The children listen and

look as Mrs. McTighe signs color

  words, directions and the children's

own names. Miss Jen Hawkins assists

the children in listening to the

  magnification of sound through a

  hearing aid.

Do You See What  I See?

    From Santa sharing his

    favorite story to

    kindergarten creating

    characters who wanted to

    share the same story by

asking 'Do You See What I

    See?' Christmas filled our

    hearts and halls with joy.

  Science is discovering

     Ice science brought the joy

 of discovery to kindergarten.

 After making hypotheses, the

 children observed what their

body heat would do to the ice

 cubes. They recorded their

 observations on a sequence

 worksheet, and the children

 were eager to share their

 findings with their families.

Workshop
Workshop has been great! The children enjoy the activities and love having their parents share the experience. Each week we have stations dedicated to reinforcing concepts that we have covered in math, reading and science.

The children are already sharing the joy of reading. Each week decodable books and phonics stories allow us to share what we have learned with our families. The children read the stories together at school. Then they are eager to take home their booklets and read them to anyone who will listen. Several stuffed animals have benefited from this sharing!

Every day we begin and end our day with a prayer. In religion, the children have learned the Our Father and the Hail Mary. We encourage parents to practice these prayers with their children at home.

The Joy of Kindergarten

What a terrific beginning we have had! We have experienced such fun in learning at every turn. In Math we have learned so much. We have been working to recognize shapes, finding them all around us. We have been creating and discovering patterns and have been amazed at all the patterns in our surroundings. We have practiced counting and writing our numbers.

Reading Street has become our road to reading. We learned “amazing words “for our oral vocabulary and “frequently used words” for our reading vocabulary. We really love reading.

Science has become one of the highlights of our week. There is so much to learn about the world.
In religion we have studied God’s gift of the world to us. We have discussed the creation of this wonderful world and how it meets our needs.
