St. Ursula School sings the National Anthem

Students from St. Ursula School
sang the National Anthem
before
the September 19th Pittsburgh
Pirates game. The students were
led in
their singing by 4th grade
teacher Patricia Cross. The school
has participated
in this event
many times and it is always a
fun time for the students and
their
families. After singing the
National Anthem, the students
and their families stayed and
enjoyed the game. And the
Bucs won!

St. Ursula School Field Day & Science Olympiad 2010

Please be patient, there
are a lot of photos and they
may take some extra time
to load.
Field Day and Science Olympiad
held at St. Ursula was the perfect
combination of kids, teachers,
parents and principal having
healthy fun together –a great
work out for body and mind.
The games were played outside
in the ball field. Mrs. Coup had
activity sheets and some upper
grade students helped the lower
grades with instruction and
participation in “Iceberg”,

“Sponge Bob Relay”, “Steal
the Bacon Soccer”, “Obstacle
Course”, and “Capture the Flag”
and “Parachute”.
Mrs. Heyl’s Science Olympiad had
morning and afternoon sessions so
all students could try their hand at
paper card tower building,
spaghetti, marshmallow and
tape building to hold the most
weight, ramp races and more.
Mrs. Patricca, Mrs. Bridgeman,
Mrs. Hofbauer and parent helpers
worked with the Ready K and
Kindergarten classes to have a
super bubbly Science Olympiad
where the students tried many
items in the bubble solution to
see what would produce results. The kids had a surface texture lesson to see
where their cars would roll. Popsicles were a welcome treat!
Thanks to all who volunteered their time and to Mrs. Coup and Mrs. Heyl for
their organizational skills!
Developmental Soccer is Fun!

Developmental Soccer for
Third and Fourth graders was
held in the fall and spring.
John Wallace coached the kids
and the weekly practices taught
them the basics and developed
their skills. Jeff Bittner and Kim
McLoughlun assisted and through
the efforts of our devoted parents,
a rewarding experience was the
result. Seven games were played
this spring against Christ the
Divine Teacher, Butler Catholic,
Aquinas Academy, St. Mary,
St. Bonaventure, and St. John
(Monaca). Ties in the last two
games against Aquinas and Christ the Divine Teacher highlighted the
season. St. Ursula thanks the coaches for
a great job.
St. Ursula School presents Honk, Jr.

This year’s spring musical was
“Honk, Junior”. The cast was
made up of students in grades 3
through 8.
They performed in this
Broadway Junior musical from
Music Theatre International on
May 13th and May 14th. This show
is a contemporary retelling
of Hans Christian Andersen's
classic story of "The Ugly
Duckling" and featured enjoyable
music sung by a lively cast.
Mrs. Cross, Director, and
Professor Coury, Musical Director,
volunteered their time to practice with the student cast after school a few days a week from February to May to
get the cast
ready for performances. Mrs. Heyl worked with the students to make the
background and gorgeous
“hatchable” eggs. Through the creative efforts of the
parents, the cast also wore outstanding costumes. The
production of “Honk,
Junior” certainly proves that the many ways we are different can come together
in a
wonderful way. Behind the
scenes photos can be found on the Fourth Grade Page.
Spring Concert & Art Show

The students of St. Ursula
School performed in the annual
band concert and Ready-K
& Kindergarten concerts.
The school band is directed by
Susan Chambers. Each year, the
8th grade students present
Mrs. Chambers with a music stand
with their names on the back. Also
that evening, the annual art
show was on display for everyone
to enjoy.

Iceburgh Surprises St. Ursula Students

St. Ursula students are great
Penguin fans and they were totally
surprised when Iceburgh showed
up in their classes. Iceburgh
worked a few problems, spelled a
few words and even sang and
danced for the students. The
students, however, were most
interested in getting an
autograph and a picture with
the famous Penguin.

2010 Eighth Grade Receives Sacrament of Confirmation

Eighth grade received the
sacrament of Confirmation from
Bishop Wm. Winter on April 22.
Their personalized banners are
on display in the church. Students
are well prepared and their
Confirmation names were
published in the April 25th parish
bulletin. Go forth Christian
soldiers!

Our annual Bring-A-Friend to
Lunch day was bigger and better
than ever! 104 guests came to
dine with their students during the
lunch periods. Extra volunteer
staff prepared the delicious and
fresh chicken wraps, salads, fruit
and plated desserts that would
make any kitchen or restaurant
reality show drool. Thanks to Mrs.
Huber and Mrs. Cullen, the
Nutrition staff, and Student Life for
the planning. Seems St. Ursula
School is a great place to learn
AND eat lunch!

Ready K and Kindergarten
celebrated Pastor Appreciation
Day a little early this year when
they gave St. Ursula's Pastor,
Father Garrett Dorsey, a card
before the weekly Friday school
Mass. The children listen intently
each week as Father tells them in
the homilies about Banana Kings,
Tempered Swords, and The Good
Shepherd. The children enjoy
having Father join them to share
school lunches and other activities
throughout the year. At these
times, they talk to him about their
moms and dads and what they
enjoy doing and Father is always a good listener. Kindergarten is blessed
to celebrate Mass and school days with
Father Dorsey. The students were delighted to be able to show their
appreciation by making a special card for him.

Grades 4th through 8th traveled
to the Allegheny River to spend
the day on the Riverquest boat.
The Riverquest is a floating lab
that travels on Pittsburgh's three
rivers. Students learn by doing
hands-on experiments of samples
that are taken from the rivers.
This trip was possible due to a
grant that Mrs. Cross was able to
secure through Target Field Trip
Grants.
Please be patient, there
are a lot of photos and they
may take some extra time
to load.
Safety Week - Orange is Better! Kids and Parents
Agree!

St. Ursula Safety Outside School
Awareness week was successful in
sharing the best way to drive,
park and discharge students in the
school zone. With the help of
parents, Margy, the safety dog,
and our orange safety cones, we
were able to draw attention to an
important issue. Look for a
summary and pictures on the
school website soon. Thanks!
Some facts:
● About 15 *new* parents began
using the bus lane for drop off.
Simply go up Cole Ave. past Cella
and bear left and continue on Kirk Ave. and stop in front of the school.
Never pass a bus, just wait in line.
●
About 10 *new* parents used the parking lot and crosswalk to enter school.
●
No parking in front of the telephone pole. Please pull past it. Staying in that
yellow zone blocks cars traveling out of Cella and going down Kirk safely.
●
Park 30’ from stop sign. We will have a white line painted there soon. Parking
at this distance is a state law as well as keeps congestion out of the
intersection.
●
We had a great weather week for safety, but remember in Bad Weather, Rules still
Rule.

On
Saturday, March 20,
St. Ursula made a huge splash
with its first-ever Electronic
Recycling Day! We started the day
off with two SUV-sized loads of
monitors, keyboards and servers
that the teachers and students so
kindly cleared out from their
classrooms. Parishioners and
school families wowed us with how
many recyclables they brought-
the electronics piled up quicker
than we could load them into our
cars! In total we collected 7 car
loads, (around 60 cubic feet) of
materials, including 70 computer
monitors! All of the electronics collected will be fixed and resold or
broken down in environmentally-friendly ways
by our friends at Hi-Tech Recyclers. This project could not have been done
without the help of the many gracious
volunteers who stepped in last-minute to help out, including the
Lamperski, Huber and Spohn families and
Mrs. Lehmeier. This project was a huge success for St. Ursula School and the
entire community, and it is great
to see the ideas of "reduce, reuse, recycle" working in our daily lives!

St. Ursula Celebrates St. Joseph's Day

The St. Joseph’s Day
Celebration on Friday, March 19
was a great success. Wearing red
to honor St. Joseph, students
invited their dads, grandfathers,
uncles, godfathers, or other
special men in their lives to
breakfast. What a wonderful way
to start the day. The kids enjoyed
‘showing off’ their dad and the
fathers & grandfathers had a
chance to talk. Afterward, all were
invited to join the entire school at
mass.
Loving God, you gave St. Joseph to Jesus to be his father in this world.
Bless all fathers and help them to be an example your love for us. --

Box Top
Contest by Kelsey M , Paige G
St. Ursula School students had a General Mills Box Top
competition for students in kindergarten - 8th grade. The box top contest
started on March 1, 2010 and ended March 9, 2010. The competition was boys vs.
girls. The girls won with 1,832 box tops. The boys came close earning 1,388 box
tops. Because of this, the school earned $430.00.
Every year we have two box top competitions and there
are different kinds of teams each time.
The girls won a jeans day which will be announced at a later date. We will be
have another contest in the fall.
The two major companies that make the box tops are
Nestle and General Mills. When there is not a competition going on there are
bins in the lobby were you can put in Box Tops, Campbell Soup labels and used
printer cartridges.
THE LIVING STATIONS! By: Luke F and
Albert I
One of the Catholic
traditions is the Stations of
the
Cross but on Good Friday we
have the living stations
performed by the 8th
grade. The stations tell us
about Jesus’ journey to
Calvary, how he had to
suffered so that we could
live
forever in his kingdom of
Heaven. Catholics pray the
stations during Lent season
until Easter when Jesus rose
from the dead.
Here at St. Ursula School our religion teacher, Mrs.
Duffy, composes a living stations’ tableau with the 8th grade. This year the
part of Jesus is played by Ryan W. The three guards are played by Billy S, Matt
L, and Joel N also as Pontius Pilate. Simon is Adam B and Veronica is played by
Tina S. The part of Mary is played by Maggie W. Narrators are Sarah R and Jaime
B. They first performance was in St. Ursula Church on March 30 at 2:05. They
performed them on Good Friday The class works with Mrs. Duffy during Religion
class. While the narrators read each stations the rest of the class acts it out.
All the actors dress up so that they will look like all the characters in that
time. The living stations make you feel like you are really there and that it is
happening right in front of you.
Forensic Tournament by Matthew M and
Riley M
On April 10th, St. Ursula School, will host the novice
tournament for the Southwestern Pennsylvania Forensics League. Competitors will
be students from 30 Diocesan schools in grades five through eight who haven’t
competed before. Registration will begin at 8:30 am. Teams will meet in the
school cafeteria. The tournament will be from 9 am - 12 pm. Parents can wait in
the school cafeteria. Mrs. Heyl, our eighth grade homeroom teacher, and Sr.
Joanita, our principal, organize this tournament.
Students read in a specific category and the scoring by a judge is based mostly
on fluent reading, speech, and character plus other required traits of the
category. The categories are poetry, prose, drama and declamation. Awards
ceremony will follow when the judging is completed. Good luck, Thespians!
Honk, Jr! by Gabriella G and Bridget M
Our annual spring musical for this year is Honk, Jr.
Anthony Drewe wrote the play with music by George Stiles. Honk Junior is based
on Hans Christian Anderson’s fairytale, The Ugly Duckling. The story is about a
duckling that gets made fun of by his brothers and by the other duck yard
characters. The story tells how a young duckling deals with the struggle of
being different. He finally realizes that being different isn’t always a bad
thing. It will be preformed May 13th and 14th in the school cafeteria.
Mrs. Patricia Cross is the director and choreographer and Professor Lillian
Coury teaches the music. Students had try-outs for parts in early February and
now have started practicing. The staring roles are Ugly, the ducking, played by
Sarah R, Ida, his mom, played by Monica R, and the Cat, played by Bridget Mc.
The cast consists of students from grades five through eight. We also have 28
supporting cast members.
There is a lot of fun music in this show, from the
opening number, “Poultry Tail”, to “Play With Your Food”, to “Warts and All”.
The music is fun to sing and dance to. Professor Coury helps us with the
beautiful music and harmonies. The dance moves are fun and quirky, thanks to
Mrs. Cross.
The actors and directors are working very hard to get ready for the performance.
They only have a short time to pull this together. They are all very
appreciative of all the parents who helped. They are also very grateful to have
Mrs. Cross and Professor Coury who without which we couldn’t put on the show.
Riverquest Field Trip by Danny W and
Robby K
River Quest is an all day educational science cruises.
It takes you on a boat through the Ohio River in the city of Pittsburgh and
teaches you about environmental science. We have the privilege to go on this
field trip because Mrs. Cross was a recipient of Target Field Trips Grants. The
original date for Saint Ursula would River Quest was Monday, March 22, but due
to boat difficulties and bad weather field trip is now scheduled for April 9.
This field trip is full of science and adventure. Since
1995 more than 80,000 people have experienced the environmental mysteries and
river revelations on board River Quest’s unique floating classrooms. Their
newest boat “The Explorer” has three classrooms and is capable of carrying up to
90 people. This boat is one of the world’s first green educational vessels. It
will offer students the opportunity to study environmental science on
Pittsburgh’s three rivers.
Students will be able to identify point and nonpoint pollution sources, collect
and classify plankton and macroinvertebrates, test water samples for chemical
and physical indications of pollution, correlate form to function in identifying
birds and fish, explore concepts sustainability and green designs, discover how
they fit into in the river eco system--no mater where they live. Students from
grades 4-8 have been preparing for the adventure and really looking forward to
it.
St. Joseph Day By Erica D and Eric H
A St. Joseph’s celebration
was on Friday, March 19th,
2010. This was the second
annual St. Joseph celebration
at
the school. Students invited
their dads, grandfathers,
uncles, godfathers, and any
other special man in their
lives
to have breakfast with them.
Milk , coffee, donuts and
juice
were served for $1.00 per
person donation.
One hundred fifty eight
people attended the event.
Everybody was asked to wear
red in honor of St. Joseph, the foster father of Jesus and the loyal
husband of Mary, mother of
Jesus. The special guests were invited to join the kids at the 9a.m. Mass
to honor Saint Joseph.
On the nice sunny day the special guests enjoyed the
breakfast. They talked and relaxed before
they had to go to their jobs.
The kids and their special guests had a wonderful time! Thanks to the
moms that put this breakfast
together.
Western Pa English Festival! By : Reagan
W and Caitlyn M
The English Festival is a competition for grades 4-6
about books that they have read. Students are asked to read 4 books. This year’s
selection by the Pennsylvania Teachers’ of English are Lottery Rose, Marley and
Me, Regarding the Trees, and Silver Dollar Girl. Diocese of Pittsburgh Catholic
Schools compete at Seton LaSalle High School. The reason for this is to promote
reading for the students and to communicate the value of reading in their lives
The students get to hear and meet an author of one of
the books they have read. The author this year is Kate Klise. She will talk and
sign the book she wrote which is “Regarding the Trees”. The students also get a
chance to meet the author and get their books autographed.
After the main speaker, the kids will be divided into
teams of four to six. Each team will participate in different events or games
using the material from the books they have read. There are four games that each
team will play and try to win. Each person in the group chooses one book to
specialize in. Winners of the events get a book
St. Ursula students are preparing diligently and
looking forward to winning many books!
New On-Line Writing Program By Thadeus B
and Thomas P
Recently at St. Ursula School, our 6-8th grades
have been introduced to the Criterion Writing online program. It is a program
where students can receive assignments from teachers and type online in computer
class, or at home. The 6th grade has just received and finished their first
assignment, called a Person to Remember. The program looks at the
article, and will evaluate it with a holistic score. The highest score is a 6,
the lowest a 1. It shows the writer all of the writing and grammar mistakes,
including capitalization, and run-on sentences. It also makes sure that one
includes a conclusion, and an introduction. After it identifies the errors, the
writer may attempt to correct them, and re-submit the article. The teacher has
the option to determine the amount of times a student is able to resubmit the
article.
Criterion will be useful to teachers, who can give
students assignments online. Any teacher can login and give an assignment to a
class, for any subject, not just computers. The students enjoy typing on this
program, and are looking forward to using it for their essays. Each student has
his or her own password and username that they use to login each day. They will
use Criterion for many projects now, and are looking forward to it.

attendance. A big thank you goes to
Mrs. Lehmeier, who mentored the
teams and met with the students
many days after school to help the
teams prepare for the competition.

First, Second and Third grades
visited the National Aviary on
Nov. 23. Each class had an
instructional class. Third grade has
been studying owls so they provided
much of their own knowledge to the
instructor who was very impressed
with the students.
They met Barkly, a screech owl and
a much larger 3 pound eagle owl, and
dissected owl pellets. A graph helped
them determine the animals the owls
had preyed upon. They saw a
presentation on the wetlands birds
and some students were able to feed
the birds mealworms and grapes
right out of their hands! Some students fed nectar to the colorful
lorikeets. The students saw the penguin
encounter, crawled through the tunnels for a close look and were able to
observe their feeding time. Many
amazing penguin facts were shared by the instructor. We ate lunch, toured
the rest of the rooms and by the end
were scratching our heads wondering what a two-toed sloth was doing
in the National Aviary...
2009 Halloween Parades & Parties

The annual parade had a variety
of very creative costumes and the
students showed them off as they
walked through the school's
neighborhood.
Each year the parents plan great
Halloween celebrations for the
students. Thank you to all of
the parents for planning all of the
games and providing all of the
treats. As always, the kids had a

We are very excited about the revival of the
robotics program this year! St. Ursula has 2 teams of 10 students each: the
Robovikings (7th & 8th graders) and the Junior Robovikings (5th & 6th graders).
Thanks to Mrs. Lehmeier for leading the students and many parent volunteers in
this fun and educational program. Kudos to St. Ursula alum Chris Z. (older
brother of Dan) for sharing his knowledge and experience with all of the
newcomers. It is a true blessing!
The students have been busy setting up the field mat
along with designing and building their robots. The next steps involve
programming the robots to perform various task or missions within a 2.5 minute
time frame. In addition, each team is developing a project involving
transportation. It will be presented to a panel of judges the day of the
competition.
The competition will be held on Saturday, December 5th

their singing by 4th grade teacher Patricia Cross. The school has participated
in this event many times and it is always a fun night out for the students and
their families. After singing the National Anthem, the students and their
families stayed and enjoyed the game.
St. Ursula School Awarded Tri-State Petroleum
Corporation Education Grant
Thanks to Mascari Auto Body in Allison Park, St. Ursula
School is the recipient of a $750 grant for their science and math programs. Sam
Covelli of Mascari Auto Body, a St. Ursula parishioner, submitted the school’s
name as part of Tri-State Petroleum Corporation’s participation in the
Educational Alliance Program. The grants are distributed by Tri-State Petroleum
and the participating local retail convenience stores and Exxon and Mobil retail
facilities that successfully submit an application for a school that is served
locally in the community by one of their stores or franchises. “We will use the
money to purchase a new Lego Robotics System for students in our middle school.
Our students can’t wait to participate in this competition. This grant gives
them the opportunity to do so” says Sr. Joanita Fedor, St. Ursula Principal.
Tri- State Petroleum has participated in the grant program for 10 consecutive
years. They awarded 38 grants to area schools this year.
