Change newspaper into paper money—the ultimate recycling! - Abiti Recycling!
We have 3 bins to accept paper, catalogues, and junk mail. We have already met
the challenge of collecting 12 tons (we have 43) for a $200 bonus. Remember NO
phone books, plastic, cartons, or cardboard. Add recycling to your errand route
once a week and help the environment and our school!
Boxtops for Education – Classroom Contest continues through Feb. 22. Top three
classrooms win a jeans day!
Thanks to Jim and Ellen D. who have managed the fund raising assessment tracking
for our families since 2004 and created a database that makes it easier. We
gratefully acknowledge Erika S., Angelina S.'s grandmother, who has taken the
job after careful guidance from Jim & Ellen. Please address all questions to
Nicole S.
with “fundraising assessment” in the subject line.
April 30 is the last day to reach your $450 assessment. If your family reached
$600 in fundraising credit, you will receive a tuition credit equal to 50% of
the amount that exceeds $600.
A Heartfelt Thank You
On Sunday, February 3rd, the students of St. Ursula
School presented a gift to St. Richard Parish. St. Richard opened the doors of
their social hall and church to allowed us to hold classes while the school
awaited the construction of our temporary modular classrooms.
Each student placed an impression of their hand on a banner and the
words 'Lord Bless The People of St. Richard Church' was added to the banner. We
are truly grateful to the parish of St. Richard for their generosity.

Heinz History Center Field Trip
The students from K through 8th traveled to the Heinz History
Center for a field trip. Photos below include the 6th, 1st, and 4th grades.
The first graders enjoyed touching coal, making mining hats,
learning about how people lived at the turn of the century and when indoor
plumbing was invented. They answered questions and asked a few of their own.
They enjoyed sharing time with their friends.
Carnegie Museum of Natural History
St. Ursula spent their first day back after the long Christmas break
by taking a field trip to the Carnegie Museum of Natural History.
Silent Night --- or maybe A Not so Silent
Night
The 3rd and 4th grades performed the musical, The Not So Silent
Night before a packed audience on December 20th. The musical, a lively
production with singing, dancing and plenty of comedy reminded us all of the
true meaning of Christmas. Thank you to Mrs. Cross and Mr. Romanelli for all of
the work that they put into the musical, their hard work is truly appreciated.
Also, a special thank you goes to Mr. Romanelli's friends, Mike Henry and
Matthew Kweder, who along with Mr. Romanelli provided the musical accompaniment.
Visit Mr.
Romanelli's website for more musical news and photos.
First Grade Gingerbread
The First Grade class got to work with graham crackers, icing,
colorful (and delicious) candies to make gingerbread houses to share with their
families. Gumdrop wreaths, peppermint paths, and graham porches are just some of
the details. Take a close look! Third grade student helpers made houses too.
Sweet treats for all!

Aboard the Polar Express!
"A Polar Express PJ Party was hosted by The
Library Committee on Thursday, December 13th from 7-8 pm. There were over 40
students and siblings in attendance. Lynn R. read several stories to the
attentive audience including the highlight of the evening "The Polar Express"
The children were all dressed in their pajamas and enjoyed a snack of cookies
and hot chocolate."
Christmas Band Concert
Students,
family, and friends were treated to songs of the season as performed by the both
the Beginners Band and the Advanced Band under the direction of Mrs. Susan
Chambers. The bands performed during the day for the school and in the evening
for family.
This was the first performance by the Beginners Band and they did a great job.
Mrs. Chambers commented that this may be the best Beginners Band that the school
has ever had. Because they have done so well, the Beginners Band performed an
extra song, We Wish you a Merry Christmas, a song that they normally do
not perform at beginner level.
The Chipmunk Song,
performed by the Advanced Band, was a favorite of the kindergarten students. Both of the bands sounded great as they
performed a variety of Christmas songs.
Many of the students
performed instrumental solos.
Vocalist Megan A., accompanied by eight graders Elizabeth R., Jacob D., Kevin D.
on trumpet and Nino R. on saxophone, performed What Child is This?
Cookies
with Santa, Saturday, December 8
About 100 kids and their parents, grandparents and family members and
friends enjoyed cookies and conversation with Santa, balloon art of their
choice, crafts, games, face painting, treat bag, Chinese auction and prizes
hosted by the PTG. Many parents and St. Ursula School alumni worked to make sure
that everyone had a wonderful time.
Pancakes! -
The Class of 2008!
The 8th grade students and parents served over 200 breakfasts on
Sunday morning, November 25, in the school cafeteria. Thanks to the generosity,
support and help of many great volunteers, close to $1,000 was raised! The class
will help decide what gift they would like to purchase for the school in thanks
and remembrance.
St. Ursula's
Gingerbread House is on Display
The students
who participate in the Art Club for the Middle School Project have delivered
their gingerbread houses to Two PPG Place to be displayed during the Christmas
Season. Houses are sold at the end of the display and proceeds will benefit
the Children's Hospital Free Care Fund.
Blessing of the
Crèche
St. Ursula's band was invited to
play at the Blessing of the Crèche, which kicks off the official start of the
Christmas season in Pittsburgh. St. Ursula, along with St. Mary's and St.
Athanasius under the direction of Mrs. Susan Chambers, preformed Christmas songs
before and after the blessing for the crowds at USX.
